The Science of Essential Oils

When I first heard about essential oils, I thought they must be some mysterious potions. The more I researched them, the more I realized they are simply proven remedies that have been used for years.

Essential oils are the essence of plants. More specifically, essential oils are chemical compounds extracted from plants. It’s chemistry!

Essential oils can be obtained by distillation—often a process involving steam—or cold pressing—literally squeezing the plant. Essential oils that are extracted using chemical processes are not considered true essential oils.

They capture the plant’s “essence,” particularly aspects of its aroma and flavor. These elements give each essential oil its own characteristics.

The plant extracts are often combined with a carrier oil to make them easier to apply.

The way the oils are made is important, as essential oils obtained through chemical processes are not considered true essential oils. Also, where the plants come from is important:  Non-GMO?
